The Pompidou Center

The Pompidou Center, it's 40 years of existence, 120.000 masterpieces, more than 3 millions of visitors per year. Inaugurated on January 31st 1977, it is the biggest museum of modern and contemporary art of Europe:

Length : 166 meters

Width : 60 meters

Height : 42 meters

Entire volume : 418.320 m3

Inside of the building, the length is sensibly the same and the width is less : it is 45 meters.

5 floors are superimposed, each with a surface of à 7.500 m2 (like 5 soccer fields stacked).

The surface of the first floor is equivalent, the global surface is 45.000 m2 (above the floor).

The height between floors is 7 meters, except that of the forum which is 10 meters under ceiling.

From 40 years, permanent and temporary expositions aroused excitement, curiosity and sometimes passions. This unique postindustrial architecture lets rarely indifferent, made of transparency and colors, this building conceived by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, impacts the area, the city and more, the minds. Renzo Piano said "to have wanted to demolish the image of a cultural building which frightens. It's the dream of an extraordinarily free relationship between art and people, where we inhale the city in the same time". Beaubourg, more than other international museums, transient its role of simple organizer of exhibitions, also becoming a forum of expression and creation. Music, dance, readings, video... Arts are coming together and big spaces bathed by light (except in the basement) which today are cramped to receive about 3,3 million annual visitors (with a spike in 5,2 millions in 2013).
